Turin is a surprising city with a great history, interesting architecture, and specific cultural and gastronomic traditions.
History
- Created in 27 BC as a Roman military city, Augusta-Taurinorum became the capital of the Savoy dynasty in 1563.
- In 1720 the city became the capital of the Sardinian kingdom.

- Having survived to the Napoleonic period Turin led the Risorgimento movement and, after the unification of Italy, it became the first capital of the new state, and the Sardinian king Vittorio Emanuele II (born in Turin) was designated the first king of the united Italy.
- Throughout the 20th century, Turin has been the industrial capital of Italy, led by the FIAT car production factory.
- Nowadays, Turin has developed into a significant capital of the European cultural, hosting both cultural and sport events (2006 Winter Olympics, Davis Cup Tennis Tournament, annual film festival, gastronomic festivals).
Architecture
Whilst preserving traditions of Roman and Gothic medieval architecture, Turin is known as the capital of the Baroque. Nowadays its architecture is complemented with unique examples of modern style.

Here you can discover rich cultural traditions, visit the Royal Palace or other historical landmarks as well as museums such as the Egyptian one.
The urban and rural residences (castles and palaces) of the Savoy (under the patronage of UNESCO) will open to you the story of one of the longest ruling dynasties in Europe.

The Museum of the Cinema, the Museum of the Radio and Television of Italy, the Museum of the Automobile and the Lavazza Coffee Museum are just samples of the many museums waiting for you.
Music
Since ancient times, Turin has been marked by a musical “muse”.
Downtown you can see where Mozart lived or the famous Stradivarius violins kept at the Conservatory.
The Teatro Regio (Royal Theatre) is well known not only in Italy.
The city has a tradition of hosting annual rock festivals and festivals of street musicians
Gastronomy
Of course, it is impossible to ignore the gastronomic traditions of Turin.

In the 18th century, Vermouth was invented in Turin. Close to the city you can find the largest Italian Vermouth producers, such as Martini-Bacardi or Cinzano.

Being in Turin you should not miss its historical cafes, such as Fiorio or Bicerin.
Lovers of a special atmosphere can enjoy the exquisite Piedmontese cuisine at restaurants such as: Al Сambio, Vintage, Solferino or Circolo dei Lectori, just to mention but a few.
Many small and cozy restaurants are located at the “Quadrilatero Romano” (Via Barbaroux, Via San Domenico, Piazza 4 Marzo, Piazza della Consolata ...) where, apart from the Piedmontese cuisine, you have a considerable choice of ethnic restaurants.
The famous Turin aperitif awaits you both at the Historic Centre (Piazza San Carlo) or in Piazza Vittorio, where a beautiful view of the Turin Hills (Collina) opens up across the Po River.
And not to forget stores such as Eataly you can taste and purchase the best foodstuff from all over Italy, distributed across various thematic departments (meat, cheese, vegetables, fish, pizza, wine…).
